The Gist

This field covers efforts to keep the immune system working well into old age, including reducing the chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with aging. It also covers work to prevent or control cancer, which becomes far more common as immune function weakens.

Why It Matters for LEV

A weakened, poorly regulated immune system is linked to many age-related diseases, including cancer. Keeping the immune system functional is likely necessary for other longevity approaches to succeed, because their benefits could otherwise be undermined by immune decline.

That would support the broader goal of Longevity Escape Velocity: reaching a point where advances across multiple medical fields extend healthy lifespan faster than time passes.

Current Model Assessment

Highest score among the biology fields and a large contribution, because this field has the most actually-deployed technology: checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T are standard of care, not promises. 2006 pre-dates both. Cancer and inflammaging together account for an enormous share of the mortality and morbidity that must be removed before any other intervention can show a healthspan signal, so progress here is a precondition for measuring progress anywhere else. Thymic regeneration and in-vivo CAR are credible near-term unlocks.
